Confined Space Entrapment
Saturday, January 2, 2021

At 3:01pm on Saturday, January 2, 2021, the Ocean Pines Vol. Fire Department was alerted for a confined space entrapment in the area of Capetown Rd. Dispatch advised that an individual had fallen into a drainage pipe, with only their head above ground. Based on the report, Chief Grunewald requested a second rescue truck from Showell VFD. 1100 Paramedic 1 and Command 11-1 were first on scene with Asst. Chief Widgeon establishing command. Upon arrival, it was determined that with the assistance of the Ocean Pines Police Department the individual was successfully removed from the drainage pipe. After being evaluated on scene, the individual refused further treatment and transport.

After several attempts to reattach the drain pipe lid, it was determined that the Worcester County Wastewater department be requested for a response to provide a permanent solution. Once the area around the pipe was coordinated off with caution tape, command was terminated and all units returned to service.

While working in your yard, please always stay alert, especially around the various utilities that are located in most front yards. If you ever encounter an uncovered pipe/pit, please alert Worcester County and/or Ocean Pines Public Works immediately to prevent accidents such as this.

Units on Scene: Heavy Rescue 11, Command 11 & 11-1, 1100 A1, FP 11, OPPD, Rescue 8 (cancelled)
