On Friday, July 12, at approximately 10:36 PM, the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in the area of 10535 Racetrack Road. Upon arrival, Fire Chief Joey Widgeon advised incoming units of a tow truck that had veered off the roadway into the woods. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the tow truck had struck a pad-mounted transformer, causing widespread power outages. EMS evaluated one patient, who refused further treatment at the scene.
While on the scene of this accident at approximately 11:08 PM, the department was alerted to a second motor vehicle accident in the area of 11178 Racetrack Road. Rescue 11 and Chief Widgeon responded to the second incident, where they found a pickup truck off the roadway and into a tree. One passenger was evaluated at the scene and transported to Tidal Health in Salisbury for further treatment. The other occupant(s) of the vehicle left the scene before the arrival of Fire, EMS, and Police units.
Once the vehicle was removed from the trees, the scene was turned over to the Maryland State Police, and all units returned to the original call.
Back at the original scene, fire crews ensured that no one entered the area of the woods where the tow truck was located until crews from Choptank Electric could ground the live wires and make the area safe.
After the tow truck was removed from the woods, the scene was turned over to the Maryland State Police for further investigation. Racetrack Road remained closed for an extended period while power was restored.
