The holiday season is a time for family, friends, and celebration — but it is also one of the busiest times of year for fire emergencies. The Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department encourages residents to take a few simple precautions to help keep everyone safe.
Keep live Christmas trees well-watered and away from heat sources
Do not overload electrical outlets or power strips
Replace damaged or frayed cords
Turn off holiday lights before leaving your home or going to bed
Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn
Never leave candles unattended
Consider using flameless LED candles
Stay in the kitchen while cooking
Keep flammable items away from the stove
Turn pot handles inward to prevent spills
Keep space heaters at least three feet from walls, furniture, and decorations
Never use ovens, stoves, or grills to heat your home
Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets
Test smoke alarms monthly
Replace batteries as needed
Ensure alarms are installed on every level of your home
Your safety is our mission. By following these tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season for you and your family.
