As our community prepares to celebrate Independence Day, the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department reminds everyone to make safety part of your holiday plans.
The Fourth of July is a time for family, friends, cookouts, boating, fireworks, and community celebrations, but it is also one of the busiest times of year for emergency responders. A few simple precautions can help prevent fires, injuries, and unnecessary emergencies.
In Maryland, most fireworks are illegal for personal use. The Maryland State Fire Marshal advises that only limited novelty items, such as sparklers, party poppers, and snakes, are permitted under state law. Firecrackers, Roman candles, bottle rockets, aerial fireworks, and similar devices should be left to permitted public displays.
If you plan to celebrate with grills, outdoor activities, or time on the water, please remember:
Keep grills away from homes, decks, railings, trees, and other combustible materials.
Never leave grills, fire pits, or open flames unattended.
Keep children and pets away from hot grills, sparklers, and fireworks.
Do not drink and drive, and do not operate a boat while impaired.
Watch children closely around pools, ponds, canals, and open water.
Dispose of ashes, charcoal, and smoking materials in a safe metal container.
Make sure your address is visible in case emergency responders need to find you.
Please be respectful of your neighbors, veterans, pets, and those who may be sensitive to loud noises.
OPVFD encourages residents and visitors to attend professional fireworks displays instead of using fireworks at home. These displays are safer, permitted, and handled by trained professionals.
From all of us at the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department, have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July. Celebrate responsibly, look out for one another, and call 911 immediately in the event of an emergency.
