Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries

March 07, 2014

The Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department has a simple, but powerful reminder for all members of our community this weekend.  When you change your clocks for Daylight Savings Time, change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and please remind your friends, family and neighbors to do the same.

Additionally, it is recommended to replace smoke alarms every 10 years and have a mix of both ionization and photo electric smoke alarms to alert you to all types of home fires.  A working smoke alarm doubles your chance of surviving a home fire.  Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home structure fires in half.  Thousands across the country are injured and killed each year from home fires.  Overall, roughly 66 percent of home fire deaths in this country occur in homes without working smoke alarms.

Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors can be purchased at local supercenters and hardware stores, for a relatively low cost.  Please remember to test them and practice your escape plan with your family monthly.
