Extinguished Structure Fire (Lightning Strike)

March 18, 2021

At 9:16pm on Thursday, March 18, 2021, the Ocean Pines Vol. Fire Department was alerted for an extinguished residential structure fire on the 20 block of Teal Circle.  Worcester Central advised that the caller stated, "the outside of their home was now black."

Chief Grunewald arrived on scene, established command, and instructed the crew from Engine 1102 to begin investigating the incident. The crew spoke with the homeowner who led them to a screened in porch area where they found an outdoor light control module connected to an electrical receptacle and vinyl siding that had signs of charring/fire damage. Using a thermal imaging camera (TIC), a heat signature was identified higher on the wall and an additional outlet that had charring was found inside a cabinet within the home.

The Crew of Engine 1103 identified a tree in the front yard that showed signs of recent lightning strike (scarring on the bark from the branches in the canopy to the roots). The base of the tree was within 2 feet of an outdoor light fixture that was connected to the control module on the screened porch.

The scene was turned over to the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office for further investigation.

Units on Scene: Ocean Pines Engine 1102, 1103, Command 11, 1100 A3, FP 11 as well as the Ocean Pines Police Department and the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office.
