UPDATE: ‘Improperly Discarded Smoking Materials’ Cited As Berlin Kitchen Fire Cause
Press release from Worcester County Fire Marshals Office:
‘At 3:53 PM Wednesday, the Berlin Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a report of smoke in the kitchen of the historic Victorian period three-story hotel and restaurant that dates back to 1895. First arriving units reported smoke and fire coming from the kitchen area of the building. Firefighters quickly contained the fire to an area below a window leading into the kitchen. Worcester County fire investigators determined the fire was attributed to improperly discarded smoking materials. Berlin was assisted by Ocean City, Ocean Pines, Showell and Newark Volunteer Fire Departments. Hotel occupants were displaced for approximately 1 hour until the fire was brought under control. The restaurant will remain closed while repairs are made and was referred to the Worcester County Department of Environmental Health for further action.’
