Water Rescue

February 18, 2023

On Saturday February 18, 2023 at approximately 2:00pm the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department was alerted to assist the Showell Volunteer Fire Department with a water rescue. The initial report from Worcester Central was that a kayaker was potentially drowning in the St. Martin River. Personnel from Showell and Ocean Pines responded to the Ocean Pines boat ramp and White Horse Trailer Park and began searching the water for any signs of the kayaker; simultaneously Rescue Boat 11 was launched from the Yacht Club and headed towards the river. The kayaker was rescued from the Bishopville shoreline of the river by Rescue Boat 11 and was immediately taken to White Horse Park where paramedics from both departments tended to the kayaker who had been in the water for at least 45 minutes. Thankfully, the kayaker did not sustain any injuries and refused further treatment after being evaluated and warmed up.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources responded as well by land and sea to assist with the incident.

This is just another example of why the Ocean Pines and Showell Volunteer Fire Departments purposely train together. In August of 2022, both departments participated in a joint water rescue exercise that laid the foundation for how personnel would respond and communicate during incidents such as the one today.

REMEMBER: It is important, no matter how experienced you may be, no matter the vessel you are in (kayak/motor boat/jet-ski etc.), to always wear your Personal Flotation Device (Life Jacket). For more information: https://safeboatingcampaign.com/resources/
