On Thursday February 23, 2023 at approximately 7:13pm the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department was alerted to respond to a possible residential structure fire. The initial report from Worcester Central was that the caller stated that their neighbor's porch was on fire and their husband was attempting to put it out with a garden hose.  Units from Berlin, Bishopville, Ocean City and Showell fire departments were requested to respond as well.Upon arrival, crews found the bulk of the fire to be extinguished. There was damage to both the upper and lower decks as well as to outdoor furniture. To ensure the fire would not spread further, crews cut out several sections of the burnt deck and removed the patio furniture from the lower deck. 

The scene was turned over to the Worcester County Fire Marshals for further investigation.

While the exact cause of this fire is unknown at the time of this report, it is still a great opportunity to remind everyone about smoking cigarettes responsibility. Always smoke outside and when you are finished, put cigarettes out all the way. Do this every time. Do not walk away from lit cigarettes and other smoking materials. Put water on the ashes and butts to make sure they are completely out before they are discarded.
