Commercial Structure Fire & Hazmat Incident

August 22, 2023

Tuesday August 22, 2023 proved to be a very busy day for the volunteer and career members of the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department. At approximately 11:22am, the department was requested to assist the Berlin Fire Company with a commercial structure fire at the Exxon gas station in the area of Friendship Road and Grays Corner Road. The crew from Engine 1102 served as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) for the duration of the Two-Alarm Fire. The RIT team is a designated crew that serves as a stand-by rescue team for personnel and are available for the immediate search and rescue of any missing, trapped, injured, or unaccounted for firefighter(s). This incident pulled resources from all over northern Worcester county, eastern Wicomico County, and southern Delaware with over 20 pieces of apparatus on scene.

At approximately 3:00pm, while Ocean Pines personnel were returning to the station, they were alerted to respond to a Hazmat Incident at the Ocean Pines Yacht Club. The Worcester County Hazmat team along with the Showell Volunteer Fire Department assisted with investigating the incident and ventilating the area. According to Fire Chief Steve Grunewald, an employee at the yacht club accidentally mixed bleach with another cleaner, creating chlorine gas. The chemical solution was isolated to a small area of the kitchen. The building was evacuated Tuesday afternoon while further risk from the toxic vapors were mitigated. One patient was evaluated on scene and transported to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin. The scene was turned over to the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office for further investigation.
