Residential Structure Fire

March 29, 2024

On Friday, March 29, 2024, at approximately 5:40 pm, the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for a Residential Structure Fire in the 700 block of Ocean Parkway. Worcester Central advised the caller stated that their son was still in the residence and was actively lighting clothes on fire in his bedroom and was refusing to leave. With that report, Chief Widgeon requested a second alarm (for manpower).

Upon arrival, Engine 1102 confirmed smoke showing from the front of the residence with one person still inside. As crews were attempting to gain entry into the bedroom, the individual in the room exited through a window and attempted to flee the area. Fire Department personnel were able to maintain contact with the individual until Ocean Pines Police arrived. Paramedics evaluated the individual on the scene and transported them to Tidal Health in Salisbury for further evaluation.

Thanks to a quick response by first responders, the fire was contained to the room of origin with smoke damage throughout the residence. The scene was turned over to the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office for further investigation.

Thank you to the Berlin, Showell, Bishopville, Ocean City, and Selbyville fire departments for their assistance.

Get out and Stay Out!

Smoke and fire spread very quickly, so it’s important that everyone knows exactly how to get outside to safety calmly and quickly. Every family must have a home fire escape plan. A home fire escape plan is a plan to get out of the home quickly in case there is a fire.
