August 11, 2025

OPVFD thanks the community, OPA Board, and GM John Viola for decisive support

Ocean Pines, MD — August 11, 2025 — The Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department (OPVFD) is proud to announce that the Southside Fire Station Referendum passed with a total of 2,145 “Yes” votes and 537 “No” votes—nearly 80% in favor. This monumental vote reflects the community’s strong commitment to public safety and the future of emergency services in Ocean Pines.

The OPVFD would like to thank the Ocean Pines Association Board of Directors and General Manager John Viola for their leadership and collaboration throughout the process. The department also thanks the OPVFD Building Committee and the general membership for their tireless work and engagement.

“We are grateful to our residents for their trust and overwhelming support,” said Chief Joey Widgeon. “This project is about ensuring our firefighters and Paramedics have the modern facilities they need to do the job.”

“This outcome is the result of years of dedication by many people,” added President Joe Enste. “We want to recognize Past Chief Steve Grunewald and Past President David Van Gasbeck for laying the initial foundation, and to thank everyone who contributed facts, feedback, and encouragement. We’re excited for the next steps and will continue to be thoughtful stewards of this project.”

Next Steps

OPVFD will continue working closely with the Ocean Pines Association on detailed design, permitting, and project coordination to move the South Station project forward. Additional updates will be provided at public meetings and on opvfd.com and OPVFD’s official social channels.
