Stay Safe This Holiday Season

The holiday season is a time for family, friends, and celebration — but it is also one of the busiest times of year for fire emergencies. The Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department encourages residents to take a few simple precautions to help keep everyone safe.

Fire and Electrical Safety

  • Keep live Christmas trees well-watered and away from heat sources

  • Do not overload electrical outlets or power strips

  • Replace damaged or frayed cords

  • Turn off holiday lights before leaving your home or going to bed

Candle Safety

  • Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn

  • Never leave candles unattended

  • Consider using flameless LED candles

Cooking Safety

  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking

  • Keep flammable items away from the stove

  • Turn pot handles inward to prevent spills

Heating Safety

  • Keep space heaters at least three feet from walls, furniture, and decorations

  • Never use ovens, stoves, or grills to heat your home

  • Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

  • Test smoke alarms monthly

  • Replace batteries as needed

  • Ensure alarms are installed on every level of your home
