Spring Forward, Check Your Alarms

March 08, 2026

Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department Public Safety Reminder

As residents across the country set their clocks forward one hour for Daylight Saving Time, the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department is reminding the community that this is also the perfect time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

When you “Spring Forward,” take a few minutes to protect your family by testing every alarm in your home. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by nearly half, yet many homes still have alarms with dead batteries or units that are more than 10 years old.

What You Should Do This Weekend

The Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department recommends residents:

Test all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home.
Replace batteries in alarms that are battery powered.
Check the manufacture date on your alarms — replace units older than 10 years.
• Make sure alarms are installed inside every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home.
• Review your family escape plan and ensure everyone knows two ways out of each room.

A Simple Step That Saves Lives

“Daylight Saving Time is a great reminder to make sure your home’s early warning systems are working properly,” said Captain Joe Enste from the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department. “Taking just a few minutes to check your alarms could save lives.”

If you are unsure about the condition of your alarms or need assistance, the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department encourages residents to reach out for guidance or fire safety information.
