Outside Fire- North Ocean Pines

August 31, 2020

At 7:41am on Monday, August 31, 2020, the Ocean Pines Vol. Fire Department was alerted for an outside fire on a pier. Paramedic Unit 1100 A1 arrived first on scene and confirmed a small fire on a finger pier being extinguished by the Ocean Pines Police Department. Chief Grunewald established command and directed the crews from the incoming apparatus to report to the pier and initiate overhaul operations. Upon conducting overhaul, it was determined that the homeowner had pulled an underwater light from the water, laid it on the pier, and forgot to turn it off prior to leaving his home. The heat from the light caused a small fire that burned through several pieces of wood on the pier. Power was disconnected to the light fixture and after removing several pieces of charred pier and thoroughly wetting any remaining hotspots, command was terminated and all units were placed in service.

Always remember to secure the power on any type of light if it is going to be in contact with combustible material.

Units on Scene: Engine 1102, Special Ops 11, Command 11, 1100 A1 and FP 11
