Fuel Spill

November 05, 2020

At 3:46pm on Thursday, November 5, 2020, the Ocean Pines Vol. Fire Department was alerted for a fuel spill in the canal along Wood Duck Drive.  Chief Grunewald was first on scene, established command, and confirmed an odor of gasoline as well as a visible slick in the canal. The Showell VFD was requested to respond to the scene to provide additional manpower. Due to the nature of the incident, the county Hazmat team responded to the scene and in consultation with the Maryland Department of the Environment, a plan to boom off the impacted area was initiated. With the assistance of Rescue Boat 11, booms were deployed in the canal to contain and absorb the spilled gasoline. The booms will remain in the water for several days to ensure as much of the spill is absorbed and will be retrieved by the Hazmat team. After a final debrief, all units were placed in service.
