At 1:59 am on Saturday, December 5, 2020, the Ocean Pines Vol. Fire Department was alerted for a single vehicle accident with entrapment on west bound Rt 90/Ocean Expressway. 1100 Paramedic 2 was first to arrive on scene and confirmed a single vehicle on its side with one patient trapped. Upon arriving on scene, Chief Grunewald established command and requested Ocean City be alerted for a second rescue truck. Crews from Heavy Rescue 11 quickly deployed Rescue 42 struts to provide stabilization while Assistant Chief Widgeon and our paramedics began to stabilize the patient. After removing the windshield, the patient was successfully extricated from the vehicle and was transported to Tidal Health for further evaluation.
The location of the vehicle, which had left the roadway and landed down an embankment on its side in a ditch coupled with very strong rain/wind made this rescue very challenging. Crews battled through knee to thigh level water in the ditch as well as excessive mud conditions on the embankment. Thanks to continuous training and strong leadership from the officers on scene, the patient was quickly extricated and all personnel remained safe despite the circumstances.
The scene was turned over to the Maryland State Police for further investigation.
