At 4:12pm on Friday, June 18, 2021, the Ocean Pines Vol. Fire Department was alerted for a motor vehicle accident involving four vehicles along eastbound Ocean Expressway/Rt. 90. 1100 Paramedic 1 & 2 were first to arrive on scene and confirmed the initial report and advised that one patient would require extrication. Chief Grunewald assumed command and requested assistance from the Maryland State Police Aviation Command while crews from Rescue 11 & Special Ops 11 removed the roof of the vehicle with the trapped patient. Once the patient was removed from the vehicle, they were transported to the South Ocean Pines Helipad and transported to Shock Trauma via Trooper 4; Showell VFD provided support for the landing zone. All other patients were evaluated on scene and refused further treatment. After a brief period of cleanup, the scene was turned over to the Maryland State Police for further investigation.

REMEMBER: A driver is at a higher risk of rear-ending a vehicle when they are following less than 2 seconds behind the vehicle in front of them. You should have one full car length between you and the car in front of you for every 10-mph. The distance necessary depends on the weather conditions, the speed, and the road itself. So one car length, 15 feet, may be a safe distance when traveling 10-mph, but is not considered safe when traveling at 65-mph. When a vehicle stops abruptly the vehicle following too closely will be left with little or no time to react and brake.
