On Wednesday March 8, 2023 at approximately 4:49pm the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department was alerted for a residential structure fire at 13 Hickory Way in South Ocean Pines. Worcester Central advised the caller reported seeing smoke on the second floor of the residence, and he had pets on the second floor. Showell, Berlin, and Bishopville Volunteer Fire Departments were requested to assist with the initial dispatch.
OPVFD Chief Steven Grunewald was first on scene and advised of a two story structure with smoke showing from the roof and requested an additional engine response from Ocean City. Upon arrival, the crews from Ocean Pines Engine 1103 and Berlin Ladder 6 were able to quickly extinguish the fire and keep the fire damage to the room of origin on the second floor. The remainder of the structure did suffer smoke, heat, and water damage.
After completing overhaul, the scene was turned over to the Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office for further investigation. ***The residence did have working smoke alarms and all occupants and pets were able to safely evacuate the structure prior to our arrival.
During a fire, closing the door could have a potentially life-saving impact.
This particular incident is another reminder that closed doors can prevent the spread of fire throughout a house and potentially save lives. In this incident, the fire was contained to a bedroom because the door was closed.
