On Tuesday May 23, 2023, the Showell and Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Departments conducted a joint training burn at an acquired structure in Showell, MD. While interior fire attacks were not suitable for this structure, it provided a great opportunity to discuss and demonstrate what different smoke conditions look like and what could be expected in the seconds and minutes following those conditions. Fire flow path was also discussed and members learned how a fire can present itself differently depending on the amount of fresh air/oxygen that is feeding the flames. Members from both departments practiced external ventilation techniques and exterior fire control/operations to protect nearby exposures. This is particularly important for the Ocean Pines community as learning to protect exposures during a fire is critical due to the close proximity of our houses.
