Watercraft in Distress

June 26, 2023

On June 25th, 2023 at approximately 6:14pm, the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department was alerted for a watercraft in distress in the area of the fuel dock at the Yacht Club. Upon arrival, crews found a vessel partially submerged with all occupants safely on land. TowBoat US and the US Coast Guard responded and quickly went to work on pumping off the water/refloating the vessel. Fire department personnel remained on scene until both engines were fully out of the water.

With incidents such as this, our immediate priority is life safety followed by environmental safety. That means, once we know the occupants are no longer in danger, we shift our efforts to ensure any type of fuel/oil leaks are contained and mitigation efforts are implemented. Thankfully in this incident, no obvious leaks/spills were observed.

Did you know if you are ever involved in a boating accident, there is a Federal Law that requires that you file an accident report. Find out more here: https://uscgboating.org/recreational-boaters/accident-reporting.php
