On Friday, May 24th, 2024, at approximately 7:49 am, the Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department was alerted to a motor vehicle accident in the area of 11123 Racetrack Rd. While units were en route, a Worcester County Sheriff arrived on the scene and advised of three vehicles with one patient heavily entrapped. The call was then upgraded to a rescue box, which added additional medic units, rescues, and engines from Berlin and Showell Volunteer Fire Departments.

Upon his arrival, Assistant Chief Grunewald established command while personnel tended to three patients. After evaluation, it was determined that two patients would be transported via ground to Tidal Health in Salisbury, while one patient would be transported by Trooper 4 Medivac due to the nature of their injuries. Showell Park was used as the landing zone.

Racetrack Rd was shut down in both directions for an extended period for cleanup and further investigation by the Maryland State Police Department.

• Rest Stops: Take regular breaks to stretch and cool off. Driving for long periods without a break can lead to fatigue.

Plan Ahead for Traffic and Construction:

• Traffic Updates: Check traffic reports and maps for road conditions and construction zones. Summer is a common time for road repairs and construction, which can lead to delays and detours.
• Alternate Routes: Have alternate routes planned in case of heavy traffic or road closures.

Watch for Pedestrians and Bicyclists:

• Increased Activity: More people are out walking and biking during the summer. Be extra vigilant in residential areas, parks, and other places where pedestrians and cyclists are likely to be present.
• Safe Passing: Give cyclists ample space when passing and watch for pedestrians crossing the road, especially near recreational areas and crosswalks.

Be Prepared for Sun Glare and Weather Changes:

• Sunglasses and Sun Visor: Use polarized sunglasses and your vehicle’s sun visor to reduce glare from the sun, which can impair your vision.
• Weather Awareness: Summer can bring sudden thunderstorms. Be prepared for changing weather conditions, and slow down if visibility is poor or roads are wet.
