Residential Structure Fire

July 03, 2024

The Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire in the 100 block of Ocean Parkway. The caller told dispatchers they saw fire and smoke in the crawl space under the house.

Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Rob Korb arrived first and confirmed the report, noting heavy smoke coming from the living room. When 1st Assistant Chief Grunewald got there, he took command of the incident.

Crews from Engine 1102 and Ladder 6 quickly began removing sections of the living room floor to access the crawl space. Once they made access, they found the fire. The firefighters managed to put out the fire, which mainly damaged the crawl space and the floor above it.

Because of the time of day and high temperatures, extra help was called in from nearby fire departments. A big thank you to the Showell Volunteer Fire Department, Berlin Fire Company, Ocean City Fire Department, Willards Volunteer Fire Company and  the Selbyville Fire Company for their assistance.

While dealing with the fire, Ocean Pines EMS was alerted to two other medical emergencies. Thanks to strong mutual aid agreements, Showell EMS covered those calls.

After the fire was out and the investigation was done, the scene was handed back to the homeowners. Thanks to the quick action of the initial caller, more serious damage was avoided. Always remember to call 9-1-1 as soon as you think there might be an emergency because fire spreads fast.
